Trade Secrets
Staying Within Your Budget
At some point, this happens to almost everyone who loves renovating and decorating. Here are some questions we ask our clients to help them think through this purchase dilemma.
Is this item going to be the center of attention in your room?
If so, you can splurge on it and save on the other things in the room. Most of us will spend $10 on ten small things but we will hesitate to spend $100 on just one larger item. My advice? Pass on all the less expensive fillers. Spend on the one item that has “WOW” appeal.
Can an expensive fabric be used in a way that requires less yardage?
A pillow or fabric framed as wall art might only need a yard or two of fabric. Drapery panels can require 6 yards or more. If you really want the expensive fabric for the long drapery panels and you are on a budget, consider using it as banding down the leading edge of the drapery with less expensive solid fabric for the larger panel.
Is the item too precious for your lifestyle?
If so, please reconsider. You shouldn’t spend your days worrying about stains on silk when you have toddlers. Likewise, you may love the white marble countertops in the showroom kitchen but if future stains will undo you, don’t install them in the main cooking area of your house.
Which changes will most improve your space?
You should focus on these things first and do them in the right order. In other words, don’t paint before you fix the leak that caused the ceiling stain. I find homeowners gain valuable insights by consulting with a professional designer to create a plan for home improvements, taking into consideration the different phases of the project.
